Why space is scarce inside the old city
The Municipality gives 443,955 residents in 15.6 km² (2008 address-based census), or 28,458 per square kilometre; the Governorate's 436,539 carries no year, so both are approximate. At this density a spare room or pantry may not exist in many households. Level data is mapped for only 0–3 percent of buildings in 52 of the 57 neighbourhoods; Binbirdirek is highest at 11 percent (average 4.6 storeys).
Evacuation is the clearest need. In the Municipality's risky-building process owners get 15 days to object after notification, at least 60 days to demolish and, if needed, at least 30 more; its Urban Transformation Office handles rent support. We found no Fatih entry in the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality's zoning-note pages, so we name no neighbourhood. A locked room can hold belongings in that window.
From Fatih to the depot, closed streets and loading
The depot is on the Anatolian side and Fatih on the European side, so the vehicle crosses the Bosphorus. Our car-profile estimate from OSRM / OpenStreetMap (September 2026) gives about 30–38 km and 30–35 minutes without traffic: district centre 30.3 km and 30 minutes, Gülhane 32 km and 31 minutes, Pazartekke 37.9 km and 33 minutes. A loaded vehicle and traffic change this; we promise no time.
The address makes the difference. The Municipality's Zabıta page says UKOME decisions closed 228 streets to vehicles, led by the Laleli and Eminönü closed areas, that vehicles blocking street or pavement there are towed, and that Laleli has a registration petition for logistics and tradesman vehicles. We found no hours or tonnage rule. Ten temporary street markets run six days a week, without a list of which street meets which day.
From Mercan to Demirtaş: Fatih's street and slope notes
Figures come from OpenStreetMap and the Copernicus elevation model and are approximate; read slopes relative to other neighbourhoods. Six neighbourhoods differ most.
Mercan Mahallesi
Of 1.1 km of local streets, 94 percent are one-way or narrow, 90 percent one-way. Mean grade is 10.9 percent, 57 percent steep; 1 parking area is mapped. Level data covers 9 percent of buildings (4.5 storeys on average).
Katip Kasım Mahallesi
98 percent of 3 km of local streets are narrow or one-way, yet only 30 percent are one-way: the issue is vehicle width, not direction. Mean grade is 6 percent; 4 parking areas are mapped.
Demirtaş Mahallesi
The district's steepest neighbourhood by mean grade, 13.6 percent, with 75 percent of local streets steep. Only 9 percent are narrow or one-way; 4 parking areas are mapped.
Balat Mahallesi
None of 10.2 km of local streets is mapped as narrow or one-way, but mean grade is 7.5 percent and 46 percent of streets are steep; 1 parking area shows. The stepped lanes residents describe may fall outside this count; a few posts add that streets are often closed for filming.
Koca Mustafapaşa Mahallesi
11.4 km of local streets and 10 parking areas (20 per square kilometre); 16 percent of streets are one-way or narrow, mean grade 6.1 percent. One resident writes that market day slows vehicles; avoid booking the handover then.
Yedikule Mahallesi
12 percent of 8.9 km of local streets are narrow or one-way; mean grade 4.8 percent, 34 percent steep. Only 4 parking areas are mapped for 949 buildings (4.9 per square kilometre).

Preparation tips for Laleli, Mercan and Yedikule
1.Whole home or a refit? Choose the room size
Rooms are 8 m³ (1+0), 15 m³ (1+1), 22 m³ (2+1) and 28 m³ (3+1). A whole home usually fits the room of the same name; lifting only furniture out of a flat being painted may need one size less. We measure together at the free survey.
2.Write the evacuation dates down
Deadlines run from your own notification. Book the room early in that window so boxes do not pile up in the last week.
3.Ask about vehicle entry in closed areas
In Laleli and Eminönü, vehicle entry may depend on registration; ask Zabıta or FABİM and tell us. At the survey we measure the nearest open street.
4.Pack for steep streets
In Demirtaş, Sururi, Mercan and Binbirdirek the mean grade is above 10 percent. Keep boxes small, dismantle wardrobes, ask about a separate fridge run.
5.Rule out market day
One resident writes that market day makes narrow streets harder for vehicles. Ask the muhtar which day is yours and book another.
Room sizes and monthly prices

| Fits a 2+1 home | 22 m³ | ₺8,000 |
| Fits a 3+1 home | 28 m³ | ₺9,000 |

Questions about storage in Fatih
How are things carried if the vehicle cannot enter the street?
We collect from the door; if the vehicle cannot enter, boxes are carried by hand to the nearest open point. In Mercan and Katip Kasım 94–98 percent of streets are narrow or one-way, so distance and crew size are settled at the survey.
My building is being evacuated. When should belongings go into storage?
The Municipality's process gives 15 days to object after notification and at least 60 days to demolish. We suggest moving early in that window; confirm your date with the Urban Transformation Office, which handles rent support.
What should I do with old furniture I am throwing out?
The Municipality says discarded household furniture is collected under a tender but names no request channel; asking FABİM makes sense. Electronic waste is collected from the address once reported. Keep only what you will store.
Can you collect stock from a shop near a han or bazaar?
We collect from the door anywhere in Istanbul. Near han courtyards and pedestrian streets, where the vehicle can stop is decisive; for a closed-area address, ask the Municipality about registration first.
