From Halkalı's blocks to Kanarya's renewal: where the need for storage comes from

The Municipality and the District Governorate both give the population as 785,270 (2025 ADNKS); the Governorate lists 21 neighbourhoods. Where storey data is mapped, the average is 11.8 in Atakent (13 percent of buildings carry it) and 11.3 in Halkalı Merkez (3 percent); in Söğütlü Çeşme 50 percent of the buildings carry it and the average is 3.7. Halkalı Merkez's average rests on a small part of its 2,310 buildings.

The Municipality's Kanarya renewal page describes 713 rights holders and says most buildings predate the 1999 earthquake. Its Urban Transformation Directorate also handles evacuation, demolition permit and rent support applications. If your belongings must wait until the new flat is ready, that gap is what a room is for. On Ekşi Sözlük a few writers complain about tall buildings without parking on narrow streets in Fatih, Cumhuriyet and Cennet; that is an impression, not official data.

From Bahariye to Halkalı: the road to the depot and the street conditions

Küçükçekmece is on the European side, our depot on the Anatolian side in Abdurrahmangazi, so the trip crosses the Bosphorus. Our OSRM / OpenStreetMap car estimate for September 2026 gives about 51–57 km and 35–45 minutes without traffic: 50.8 km and 37 minutes from Bahariye, 53.3 km and 40 minutes from the district centre, 57.5 km and 45 minutes from Halkalı. A loaded vehicle's route and time can differ.

The Municipality calls the relief gently undulating; in our surface model the steep share of local streets runs from 18 to 56 percent by neighbourhood (indicative). Narrow or one-way streets are 52 percent in Sultan Murat and 47 percent in Gültepe, 0 percent in Söğütlü Çeşme and Yarımburgaz. Kanarya, Yarımburgaz, Yeni Mahalle and Yeşilova have no mapped parking area. The Zabıta page has no published rule for removal vehicles or road occupation; the market list shows the market area on Yalı Caddesi in Fatih closed to traffic on Fridays.

• Atakent Mahallesi

  The largest neighbourhood in the profile (8.475 km²); 13 percent of 70 km of local streets are narrow or one-way, the steep share is 31 percent. Storey data exists for 13 percent of 1,551 buildings, averaging 11.8; 229 parking areas are mapped.

• Halkalı Merkez Mahallesi

  Only 6 percent of 59.5 km of local streets are narrow or one-way, but the steep share is 42 percent, the mean grade 6.4 percent. Storey data exists for 3 percent of 2,310 buildings, averaging 11.3. A few writers call the climb from Marmaray very steep.

• Kanarya Mahallesi

  19 percent of 28.8 km of local streets are narrow or one-way, the steep share is 42 percent. No parking area is mapped; fewer than 1 percent of 2,361 buildings carry storey data (average 4). A few writers say street names are almost all bird names; give the door number too.

• Tevfikbey Mahallesi

  The steepest neighbourhood in the profile: steep share 56 percent, mean grade 7.9 percent. 22 percent of 23.3 km of local streets are narrow or one-way; 7 parking areas are mapped. A few writers describe single-vehicle corridors with parking on both sides around Sefaköy.

• Gültepe Mahallesi

  47 percent of 13.2 km of local streets are narrow or one-way; the steep share is 23 percent, the mean grade 4.1 percent. There are 1,114 buildings and 1 mapped parking area. The Municipality lists a 198-vehicle underground car park among ongoing projects.

• Sultan Murat Mahallesi

  At 0.258 km², the smallest neighbourhood in the profile. 52 percent of 6.7 km of local streets are narrow or one-way, the highest share in the profile; the steep share is 20 percent. The map shows 345 buildings and only 1 parking area; width, not slope, is the issue.

Before you empty a Küçükçekmece home: tips for blocks, streets and slopes

1. 1.Only one or two rooms emptied? Start with the small room

   Rooms are 8 m³ for 1+0, 15 m³ for 1+1, 22 m³ for 2+1 and 28 m³ for 3+1. If one or two rooms are emptied, the small room usually fits; we confirm at the survey.

2. 2.Ask Atakent and Halkalı sites about their rules

   Ask the site management about vehicle entry, the service lift and moving times. A few writers say roads clog at school hours in Atakent.

3. 3.Keep boxes small on narrow streets

   In Gültepe, Sultan Murat and Kemalpaşa, if the vehicle cannot reach the door, items are carried by hand. Use medium boxes and room-name labels.

4. 4.Split the weight on slopes

   In steep neighbourhoods such as Tevfikbey, İnönü and Kartaltepe, pack books and kitchenware in small boxes and take big wardrobes apart beforehand.

5. 5.Tell us your evacuation date in a renewal

   If you live in Kanarya or another renewal area, share the evacuation and handover dates at the survey. You can visit the room on any day.

6. 6.Book the lift early in newly built blocks on merged plots

   One writer notes that in older neighbourhoods plots have been merged and two-storey buildings replaced by 9–10 storey blocks while the streets stayed the same; this is not official data. If you live in such a block, talk to the management beforehand about the number of floors, the size of the service lift and whether a vehicle may stop briefly on the street; we sort out the rest with you at the survey.
